An award-winning architectural renovation in central Wellington
Ngahuru proves that an exceptional home does not always begin life as a house.
Before its transformation, this free-standing inner-city Wellington building had served several commercial purposes, including as a plastics fabrication factory, panel-beating premises and photography laboratory.
Working with John Mills Architects, Scotty’s Construction helped transform the former commercial building into a distinctive architectural home.
Converting an existing commercial structure for residential living presents a very different construction challenge from a conventional renovation. The existing building needs to be adapted for an entirely new use while carefully delivering the architect’s design intent and the level of finish expected in a high-quality residential project.
The completed renovation demonstrates the potential of adapting an existing Wellington building rather than starting again with a conventional new home.
Ngahuru received significant recognition at the 2019 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, winning a Renovation Gold Award, Regional Category Award, Regional Craftsmanship Award and Regional Supreme Renovation Award.
