A warmer, healthier renovation of a 1930s Wellington home
This Melrose renovation gave a much-loved family home a new lease on life.
Inherited from an aunt, the 1930s house held strong childhood memories for its owners. Rather than demolishing the existing property and starting again, the family chose to renovate it, working with architect Judi Keith-Brown and Scotty’s Construction to create a larger and more functional home.
Located on a steep Wellington site overlooking Lyall Bay, the existing house was comprehensively upgraded as part of the renovation. New wall wrap, insulation throughout and a balanced ventilation system were incorporated to improve the comfort, health and energy efficiency of the home.
At the same time, the house was redesigned to provide the additional space and functionality needed by a family of four.
Renovating older Wellington homes often requires careful consideration of the original structure, site access, insulation and modern performance requirements. On steep sites in particular, planning and coordination play an important role in delivering the finished project.
The result is a larger, warmer and healthier family home that retains the owners’ connection to the original property while providing a more comfortable place to live.
The project was recognised at the 2018 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, receiving an award for best renovation.
